Includes original painting by Jules Freire and original cartoon, "The passing show," by Billy Ireland (1/14/25). Contains miscellaneous materials including illustrations, sketches, research notes, clippings, tearsheets, prints, photos, negatives and correspondence. Includes Backwoodsmen book manuscript by Sickles; also letters from Milton Caniff and Alex Toth. Includes Ohio State journal clippings (1930-33); Scorchy Smith proofs, spot drawings and clippings from the 1930's; Associated Press editorial cartoons and staff drawings. Includes 6 completed original illustrations and 12 pencil drafts for the daily strip Gar Landon; also 1 pencil draft for the Bruce Lee comic strip. Includes Reader's Digent Condensed Books (1954-64) and National Geographic issue, "Alone to Antarctica" illustrated by Noel Sickles.

Sickles, Noel

Cartoonist and illustrator. Born in Chillicothe, Ohio in 1910, Sickles began his career as political cartoonist for the Ohio State journal in Columbus. After moving to New York in the 1930's he worked for the Associated Press and drew the Scorchy Smith strip when its creator died. American cartoonist, best known for the long-running comic strips Terry and the pirates and Steve Canyon. Lived for many years in New City, NY as a neighbor of Kurt Weill, Lotte Lenya, Maxwell Anderson, Alan Jay Lerner, and others. Also an original board member of the Kurt Weill for Music thanks to his long association with Lenya. Caniff died in 1988.
